Bryce Youngson and I created a water turbine-winch system that recorded the fastest time during our Spring 2019 ME-443 Turbomachinery class drag racing competition.
The rules limited everyone to using a 6" diameter turbine of any design, 15' of 3/8" tubing, and 1L of water to pull a 1/4 pound weight a distance of 20'.
Complete SolidWorks models and drawings
We chose a crossflow turbine to utilize four nozzles as opposed to a single or double nozzle Pelton wheel design.
The turbine and nozzle geometry designs followed our analysis optimizing flow rate and jet power.
Before any design, we conducted analysis to find the optimum jet diameter, blade geometry, and winch size.
Before any building, I modeled the entire system in SolidWorks, to minimize manufacturing effort.
